Mistie Joy

Mistie Joy has been drawing and creating since she could first hold a pencil. She was inspired by her grandmother who was a self taught painter and often let her experiment with her art supplies as a young child. Although she always kept sketch books and art projects going after she married, it wasn’t until her 30’s that she began to pursue her passion of painting full time.

Mistie’s work is inspired by nature and reflects her many travels in the US and to other countries. However, many of her pieces feature the beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota where she grew up camping and enjoying the outdoors with her family. She was always drawn to hiking and exploring the mountains where she says the vast landscape makes you feel small and your worries melt away.

Starting off her paintings with inks, she enjoys the fluid unpredictability of the pigments making their own path on the canvas. This abstract start to most of her pieces leads into layers of acrylic and oil paint, often adding in geometric or organic patterns and shapes to add contrast and interest. Mistie often experiments with more abstract elements and continues to explore new mediums to keep her work alive and evolving.
